This beautiful play was written by Canadian playwright Dave Deveau. Celestial Being was commissioned and first produced by Green Thumb Theatre. Celestial Being is produced by permission of the Playwright and Marquis Literary (Colin Rivers)
CELESTE IS HAVING A HARD TIME AT SCHOOL; SHE CAN’T SEEM TO MAKE ANY FRIENDS IN HER CLASS, SO SHE DECIDES SHE MUST BE FROM OUTER SPACE.
Celeste is a nine year old girl with Asperger Syndrome (Autism Spectrum Disorder). This makes it hard for her to connect or fit in with her classmates. She doesn’t understand what she is doing wrong all the time, or how everyone else can just fit in so easily. She does know she must fit in somewhere. There must be a whole world of people who are just like her. Celeste’s one true passion is outer space. She loves everything to do with it and so she believes that is where she truly belongs. She spends all her free time building a spaceship to bring her to a planet she has invented called Celestia. Before she can attempt lift off she meets Martin, a new boy at school. It turns out Martin also adores everything to do with outer space, and may even know more about it than Celeste! When he finds out Celeste is building a real rocket ship he can’t wait to help build it. Sharing this project and her secret about her home planet is not something that Celeste would normally do. She is torn between the safety of her solitude and the potential of finding a sense of belonging amongst another human. Along this journey comes a new way for Celeste to look at human interaction and an unexpected friendship. This is when the real adventure begins.
‘Celestial Being’ explores the world of a young girl with a big imagination, fears, dreams and her struggle making social connections at school because she is ‘different’. As we see the world through her eyes, and the tremendous colour and joy that her mind presents, we realize that seeing things differently can be a wonderful gift!
This heartwarming and charming production will be sensory sensitive and incorporates laughter, truth and a vernacular perfect for this age group. A wonderful way to begin or continue discussions about fitting in, Autism Spectrum Disorder, differences, empathy, patience and kindness.
